A Lifelong Learner's Journey with SUSS

In the pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement, some individuals stand out as exceptional lifelong learners. Shazana Binte Sharif, a recipient of the Lifelong Learner Award presented by the Centre for Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE), exemplifies this dedication to continuous learning. With a Master of Social Work (MSWK) from the SUSS and a portfolio of completed CET courses, Shazana has not only expanded her professional horizons but has also enriched her personal growth. In this interview, we delve into Shazana’s academic journey at SUSS, uncovering how her commitment to lifelong learning has shaped her career and perspective thus far.

Q: Shazana, what motivated you to continue your journey with SUSS after completing your Master of Social Work in 2020?

Shazana: I was genuinely interested in the topics offered in the MSWK and the Family and Couples Counselling Programme (FCCP). Additionally, I had heard many positive reviews about the programme structure and the support provided by SUSS lecturers, which came highly recommended by my colleagues.

Q: You graduated with a Master of Social Work from SUSS. Can you elaborate on how your studies at SUSS have complemented your professional life?

Shazana: The elective modules within the Master of Social Work programme introduced me to various aspects of the social work field. At that time, I was primarily involved in youth work. However, during my second year in the programme, my interest in clinical social work with families began to grow. This shift in perspective significantly impacted how I approached my work with youths.
Now, as I engage more in family and couples work, I genuinely appreciate the knowledge and insights I gained from the MSWK and the Family and Couples Counselling Programme (FCCP) at SUSS. The practicum under the FCCP was especially valuable in providing the reflective supervision I needed during my learning journey.

Q: Could you share some of your fondest memories from your time at SUSS?

Shazana: Meeting new people and engaging in knowledge sharing through discussions and experiences were particularly memorable. I also fondly recall the time spent in the library while preparing for assessments.

Q: What advice would you offer to those interested in pursuing courses but have reservations?

Shazana: It is perfectly normal to have reservations. If you are uncertain, consider speaking with individuals already in the field or those who have completed the course you are interested in. Gather advice and insights from their experiences. In my journey, balancing work, study, and family life presented its challenges, but with determination and a positive mindset, you will find support from people willing to assist you. It is important to understand your circumstances and pace yourself accordingly to prevent burnout.

Q: What is your perspective on lifelong learning, and how essential do you consider it to be?

Shazana: Lifelong learning, to me, is an integral part of life. Beyond acquiring professional knowledge and skills, it also encompasses personal development and values. Embracing lifelong learning opens one’s mind to different perspectives, self-discovery, and personal growth. This mindset can be therapeutic for some and offers numerous benefits, both personally and professionally. It may also contribute to fostering a culture of learning and empathy in our community.

Q: Would you encourage others to embark on a lifelong learning journey similar to yours? Additionally, what advice do you have for those considering starting their lifelong learning journey?

Shazana: The decision to pursue a lifelong learning journey largely depends on an individual’s goals and aspirations. There are various avenues to acquire knowledge, including formal education, lived experiences, engaging in conversations with people from diverse backgrounds, reading, mentoring, and more. Hence, it is crucial to understand your own learning style and intentions in order to make the most out of your own lifelong learning journey.

I believe it is key to know yourself, define your objectives, and take necessary action. Learning opportunities are abundant — we just need to be aware and reflect on the knowledge and experiences gained along the way.

We celebrate Shazana as she sets an example to those who are thinking of or intending to pursue their own journeys of lifelong learning. SUSS will remain a strong champion of lifelong learning and we encourage all alumni to explore the opportunities available.
