Beyond the 9 to 5: Juggling Family, Career & Education

Leader at work, learner at heart, loving father at home. Nicholas deftly manages his time to further his studies while giving his 100% at work and homes
From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., he is the General Manager of Retail (Asia) leading his team in SIS Sugar and after office hours, he becomes a graduate student pursuing a Master of Psychology (Organisational Psychology). The remainder of time left, he is a loving husband and doting father to five children.
While psychology does not have a direct relation to his field of work, Nicholas took on this course for his Bachelor’s and Master’s as he understands that it is relatable in every aspect of business and personal life. He took an interest in psychology when he was 16 as he found the behaviours of humans to be fascinating. Now, he finally has a chance to achieve his goal.
Nicholas Khoo is the prime example of what it means to juggle family, career, and lifelong learning. Today let us delve deeper into how this SUSS alumnus is accomplishing these feats.
Q: Nicholas, can you share what your motivations are to further your education despite understanding how time-consuming and taxing a master’s degree can be?

Nicholas:
Well, I think my passion for lifelong learning definitely helped push me to pursue my Master’s. As taking a Master’s in Psychology means you commit to the pursuit of understanding the psychology of people in my daily life and that makes the learning process a living experience. Interestingly enough, the more I learn, the less I feel I know about the subject matter. There is so much to unpack and it motivates me to learn more about the subject.

In addition, this is an applied organisational psychology programme that allows an actual application to real-life projects. Hence, it’s not just about putting in the effort to do your assignments well, but you also get to make an improved difference in people’s lives and that is fulfilling in itself.

Lifelong learning has been one of the pillars of SUSS and Nicholas believes that to keep up with the ever-changing landscape, one needs to be constantly upgrading one’s skill sets and be exposed to a diverse range of disciplines. In today’s Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA) working environment, trends relevant today may become obsolete tomorrow; and the only certain thing is change.
However, Nicholas is no stranger to change, as the roles he undertakes evolve with the different environments he is in. He handles this transition by ensuring that he is always present and focused in the moment. When it comes to his five children, Nicholas does his best to allocate a day each month for every child and gives them his 100% attention by partaking in activities that his children like. Yet, there is only a limited amount of time available each day and that means Nicholas has to make personal sacrifices such as completing his master’s in three years instead of two and choosing to attend an evening lecture over tutoring his child at home.
Nicholas counts himself fortunate in that, with sacrifice comes support. The pillars of support are his wife and family. He mentions that the support he received from his wife has been a key factor that allowed him to pursue his studies with minimal disruptions. His parents are also a part of this support system and have assisted, when needed.

Nicholas:
I am grateful for the support and kindness my wife and family have showered me with. For me, family and work come first, so more often than not; my sleep and personal time are the sacrificial lambs in order to better manage my time. When it comes to time management, the difficulty occurs when there is a conflict in priorities, so having my family’s support has really helped me a lot during this journey.

Even after graduating from SUSS, Nicholas has made a conscious effort to stay in touch with the university. His recent attendance at the Graduation Celebration event in 2023 attests to that. It was a platform that allowed him to network and connect with fellow coursemates amidst their busy schedules. In his eyes, he believes that everyone can benefit through the exchange of ideas, opportunities, resources, and experience. This helps the university, its students, and the alumni flourish and grow together.
Q: So Nicholas, do you have any advice for your fellow alumni?
Nicholas
I wouldn’t call it advice, but I can share some of the behaviours that I advocate:
  • Be focused on your purpose
  • Stay hungry and positive
  • Plan your time and contingencies
  • Stay disciplined in your plan
Nicholas demonstrated that it is possible to pursue your goals while managing responsibilities as a father and a leader. As long as you are determined to achieve your goals, it’s never too late to take the first step and begin your journey of lifelong learning!
