Singaporeans are seasoned travellers. At each opportunity, bags will be packed and ready for another overseas trip for shopping, eating and touring. But this event shout-out from Alumni Relations caught my eye with its unique offer. It was calling for alumni interested in being a part of a network to promote active ageing in the community to come forward. One of the attractions was the potential of a cultural exchange trip to Taiwan to learn how others are already doing this so well in the community. To me, it was a chance to do something meaningful and hopefully benefit from a different overseas experience.
Thus started our small group of Age Well Alumni Network (AWAN) members. We learnt drumming on an exercise ball with a simple pair of drumsticks, in sync with music. This fitness drumming programme is touted to improve physical and cognitive agility as well as promote social interaction. We hope to share what we learn when we reach out to seniors in our community. As we came together to practise, we started making friends as we encouraged one another and also laughed at our mistakes.
As early November drew near, excitement mounted for those of us who signed up for the trip. There were friendly reminders for us to remember to pack our drumsticks and also the brand new Age Well t-shirts into our luggage. We were finally going to embark on an enriching exchange programme with the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan, Taiwan.
A Warm Welcome and Cultural Exchange
The journey began with a sense of anticipation as participants checked in at Zenda Suites and gathered for a briefing on the vibrant activities lined up. On the first day, we joined the NCKU students and seniors in their community and connected over a shared love of music, collaborating on a drumming practice session. This artistic expression set the tone for a meaningful cultural exchange. In Addition, we also learnt on-the-spot how to drum to mandarin songs such as “高山青” and “天下的妈妈是一样的“, showcasing Taiwan’s rich heritage. We were in awe of the seniors who were so proficient and active in their drumming performance. We also visited the Ren’Ai Community Centre, where we witnessed initiatives that promote active ageing and community well-being.
Innovative Insights in Active Ageing
Included in the exchange programme were presentations by and visits to several companies and businesses dedicated to supporting active ageing. We were impressed by the innovative solutions and their collaborations with NCKU to further improve the lives of the seniors. For example, a visit to E-Champs Aesthetic Medical Group provided further insights into holistic health approaches.
Immersive Experiences in Tainan
Beyond academic and professional exchanges, the alumni were introduced to Tainan’s rich heritage. Visits to landmarks such as the Chimei Museum, Jiangong Elementary School, and Qigu Salt Fields offered glimpses into the city’s art, sustainability practices, and history. The trip also incorporated visits to Tainan’s attractions, for example, iconic spots such as the Black Bridge Sausage Museum and Hayashi Department Store, savoring Tainan’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. Each site underscored the importance of community-centric efforts and sustainable development.
Performance and Nordic Walking
The highlight for many was performing “Shine Your Light” (a National Day song familiar to Singaporeans) alongside NCKU students and a couple of their senior volunteers to more than 20 seniors at the ChangSheng Activity Centre. It was a timely reminder that having fun and learning together can forge friendships. The laughter and encouragement were contagious. This moment of harmony and collaboration was complemented by a Nordic stick walking activity, promoting physical well-being and camaraderie.
Strengthening Bonds and Building Memories
The programme concluded with a city tour and an appreciation dinner hosted by SUSS to thank our NCKU partners. We are grateful to them for planning such a comprehensive programme and looking after us so well. The debrief on the final evening was a moment of reflection, celebrating the connections and knowledge shared.
This exchange with NCKU epitomized the values of lifelong learning and community engagement. By exploring innovative approaches to active ageing and immersing ourselves in Taiwanese culture, the team not only broadened our horizons but also laid the groundwork for meaningful partnerships.
As the participants bid farewell to Tainan, we carried with us lasting memories and newfound inspiration to drive impactful change back home. Not forgetting the many new friends we made!
Tricia, Class of 2023 (BA in Biomedical Engineering), was equally enthusiastic. A regular at SUSS events, she brought along her mum, Anna, who was beaming throughout the evening. Tricia also commented how these events are a great way to reconnect, and hopes that the cap on guests can be increased so she can bring more of her family and friends to participate!
