Inspiring Change: Fayeruz’s Journey of Giving Back to SUSS
In a world where education is often seen as the key to unlocking potential, Mohammad Fayeruz Bin Surahman stands out as an example of someone who not only believes in this philosophy but actively works to make it a reality. As an alumnus of the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Fayeruz has not only achieved academic excellence but has also channelled his passion for education into giving back to the community that shaped him.
This year, Fayeruz took part in the Better Together Challenge (BTC), an annual initiative organised by the SUSS Advancement Team. This challenge invites students, staff, and alumni to create and participate in fundraising efforts for various causes within the university. Fayeruz’s contribution to this year’s challenge was the launch of his very own campaign, Surah Surah — a project that seamlessly blends his love for education with a mission to support underprivileged students.
The Surah Surah Campaign: A Beacon of Hope
The Surah Surah campaign is not just another fundraising effort; it’s a heartfelt initiative aimed at providing quality English tutoring to children from low-income families. For every $50 donated, Fayeruz offers one hour of expert English tutoring, with the goal of raising enough funds to provide 50 hours of support to those who need it most. The name “Surah Surah” is inspired by the concept of a surah (chapter) in the Quran, symbolising enrichment and guidance — a perfect metaphor for the impact Fayeruz hopes to make through his tutoring sessions.
Fayeruz’s motivation for starting this campaign is deeply rooted in his belief that education is a powerful tool for empowerment. “Education opens doors, fosters critical thinking, and equips individuals with the skills they need to navigate and succeed in life,” Fayeruz explains. However, he recognises that access to quality education is not always evenly distributed, particularly among students from low-income families. Through Surah Surah, Fayeruz aims to bridge this gap and provide meaningful support where it’s needed most.
A Lifelong Connection with SUSS
Fayeruz’s journey with SUSS began with his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Communication Studies and English Language, which he completed in 2011. Over the years, he continued his educational pursuits at SUSS, recently attaining both a Graduate Diploma and a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) in 2024. This long-standing relationship with the university has been instrumental in shaping his professional and personal growth.
Fayeruz shares that the decision to continue his education with SUSS after completing his Bachelor’s degree was driven by several factors. He was particularly drawn to SUSS’s focus on applied learning and its integration of academic knowledge with real-world applications. This approach allowed him to immediately apply what he learned in his professional life, making his education truly impactful.
To Fayeruz, SUSS is more than just an institution — it’s a community. The supportive environment, flexibility for working adults, and the opportunities to deepen his knowledge in areas he’s passionate about have all contributed to his decision to stay connected with the university. “Continuing my education with SUSS felt like a natural progression, a chance to build on the strong foundation I had already established during my undergraduate years,” Fayeruz reflects.
