The long-awaited Unwind Saturday was back on 12 November 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. All 600 tickets were sold out for the Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever, which set the box office on fire around the globe during its debut in mid-November.
Movie enthusiasts converged at the Golden Village at Vivo City as early as 5:00 p.m. to catch the sequel to the Oscar-nominated blockbuster. The Black Panther (2018) was nominated for seven awards at the 91st Academy Awards — winning three — along with numerous other accolades. With the passing of the popular lead actor Chadwick Boseman as King T’Challa, the original Black Panther, and Marvel Studios reworked Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to centre on T’Challa’s younger sister and his mother.
Our eager alumni arrived early and started queuing in an orderly manner for the registration. At the pre-event buffet treat provided by Alumni Relations, Alumni were seen catching up with friends and fellow alumni, filling the hall outside the theatre with joy and laughter as everyone indulged in the food. One of them was Ms. Dnz Woo, Master in Social Work, Class of 2022, who saw this event as a meaningful bonding time with her mother. She shared that they were back for the third time and her mother truly enjoyed the buffet.
Professor Cheong Hee Kiat joined in the show for the last time before stepping down as the President of SUSS at the end of 2022. In his short address to the packed crowd, Professor Cheong highlighted that there are upcoming plans for more courses to support continuing education. He expressed his hope for alumni to continue engaging in activities specially organised for them. Relating to the movie of the night, Professor Cheong mentioned that the movie portrays peace instilled through the avoidance of fights when one’s existence was threatened.
Similarly, at SUSS, we believe that we can each can make our mark for the greater good through initiating peace and making a difference in our world and society during rough times. Making your mark for the greater good encapsulates SUSS’ heartbeat in holistically developing learners so that we can go on to impact the world around us.
Mr. Gilbert Tan, Human Resource Management, Class 2020 said that it was his second movie experience and the show had him glued to his seat although it was 134 minutes long. He found the storyline interesting and tugged at his heartstrings.
There is a thin slate of films as many studios are still dealing with COVID-19-induced production delays. Let us look forward to more films and meeting sessions in 2023!
