In this Alumni Happenings article, we have the pleasure to e-interview Mr Ong Kok Wah, Andrew, who leads the counselling department, research and resource centre at 365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS). An alumnus of Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Andrew had completed both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Counselling.

Can you share with us your career path and interests?

Over the past 16 years, I have been working in the healthcare industry across multiple work functions such as a nurse, counsellor, clinical services operation & admin manager. I have also pioneered the Psychosocial Nurse Counselling Unit at National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) with great success. As a counsellor, I have assisted many individuals, couples and families since 2014 which include conducting mental health talks, basic counselling skills training workshops and psychosocial support groups for cancer patients & caregivers.

In recent years, I took up yoga to help me de-stress and to continue to stay active. I especially like the element of mindfulness and the experience of attuning to myself during these yoga sessions.

How would you describe your experience at SUSS?

During the early years of my career, I had set my mind on pursuing a Degree in Counselling as I realised that the emotional aspect is often undermined in clinical care. As a nurse and care coordinator then, I was lacking the relevant counselling skills and knowledge. I discovered that SUSS (previously known as UniSIM) was offering part-time degree courses for counselling. I was thrilled that I could work and study concurrently. This also provided me with an opportunity to apply my knowledge at my workplace instantaneously.

Although my batch mates were working in various sectors, we shared a common interest to support others in our profession. Subsequently, this motivated me to pursue a Master degree in Counselling as well. I am more than grateful that the course modules have provided me with relevant knowledge and skills to fulfil my work responsibilities.

What is something memorable about SUSS?

A cherished memory would be having group study sessions with my friends on campus. The friendships forged during my studies at SUSS remain strong and I am still in touch with most of them!

What are some inspirational quotes you hold close to your heart?

“Life is a sequence of lessons which must be lived to understand.”
“Life is what we make of it, always has been and always will be.

What is a piece of advice you would offer for people who might be facing struggles currently in their lives?

Using the ‘STOPP’ technique:

  • Stop reacting to situations;
  • Pause for a minute and Take a breather;
  • Observe your feelings and thoughts;
  • Reframe your Perspective and,
  • Practise what works for you.

Lastly, never be shy to seek help from others.
